Name of Department: LINGUISTICS
Information: Between 1936, when Ankara University Languages and Humanity Faculty has been built, to 1982, the linguistics course had been thought as a obligatory course at the department of Turkish Language and Literature Department. On 2nd September 1982, with the High Education Association Law it became a main branch under the Western Languages and Literature Department. The first students of this Main Branch of Linguistics started their education in 1983/1984 academic year and graduated in1987. InDecember 1991, depending on the decision by Interuniversity Committee and High Education Association, this branch turned out to be the independent department of Linguistics. The department of linguistics is composed of two main branches of General Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. The department, where education language is Turkish, accepts its students via the OSYM test results of languages.
The reason why we ask from the students that they know at least one foreign language lies in the fact that if students are familiar with one or more than one foreign language, they may be aware of the language being a system. In addition, the students can better follow the resources on the courses most of which are in English. The foreign language knowledge of the students is supported by the help of the foreign language courses during their four years of education, which adds up to the job opportunities after graduation.
